In general, I try to avoid really harrowing stuff on TV. There’s enough going on out there in the world without me sitting through death, disease and dystopian futures on screen. Growing up, two musical events punctuated my year. One was listening to Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, worrying that the choirboy chosen to sing ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ was going to fluff it. I’ve been a bit tired and emotional this week. The boys went back to school, my youngest starting for the first time, marching off in his little uniform. I cried at the gates – not because of the momentousness of the occasion, or even because I was sorry to see them go (I’ve had five months of them, are you mad?), but because of the teachers, shrugging off their worries to welcome us with a smile.
